Offline: The Real Cost of Screen Time
Future in Focus
Today, we hosted an event at our São Paulo office with Leonardo Bursztyn, Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago and founder of NOMO, an app that leverages gamification and behavioral psychology to help young people reduce their exposure to social media.
Moderated by Luiza Queiroz, Head of Strategic Communication at Turim Group, the conversation explored the impact of the digital environment on behavior, attention, and social relationships, as well as the challenges brought by the growing presence of artificial intelligence in everyday life. Topics such as technological dependency, social pressure on digital platforms, regulation, and the effects of excessive screen time among younger generations were also discussed.
Drawing from both academic research and practical experience, Leonardo shared reflections on how certain digital products can evolve into “collective traps,” in which even users who are aware of the negative effects remain connected due to the fear of social exclusion.
The discussion also highlighted the role of families, schools, platforms, and public policy in fostering healthier digital habits, particularly among younger generations.
At Turim, we value conversations that broaden perspectives, encourage reflection, and promote meaningful dialogue around the issues shaping the present and the future of families.
We thank Leonardo for the generous exchange of ideas and all the guests who joined us this morning.
